Throughout history, in war and in peacetime, animals and mankind have worked alongside each other. As beasts of burden, messengers, protectors, mascots, and friends, the war animals have demonstrated true valour and an enduring partnership with humans.
The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation not-for-profit initiative driven by community volunteers from diverse backgrounds. AWAMO’s aim is to recognize the deeds of animals in Australian military service and to educate generations to follow about the sacrifices that war animals have made.
AWAMO had made great strides in its tireless dedication to the pursuit of recognition for war animals. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of AWAMO and its President, Nigel Allsopp, Australia will join the United Kingdom, New Zealand and other countries in recognising war animals with a national day of commemoration.
In a recent speech in Parliament, Scott Buchholz MP announced that “on the 24th of February every year Australians will be able to pause and pay tribute to those animals that have served our country in war time and peacetime”
“It’s a great honour, on behalf of AWAMO in Federal Parliament to dedicate 24 February 2019 as the first National Day for War Animals in Australia.”
