(We honour the memory of Cameron Baird, an Australian hero posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Ghawchak, Uruzgan province battle. We will discuss how his friends and family continue his legacy through Cam's Cause charity, which aims to support soldiers struggling with the effects of serving in the elite 2nd Commando Regiment. We will also highlight the Cameron Baird VC MG Medallion Set, a tribute to Baird that features a commemorative medallion and replica Victoria Cross and Medal for Gallantry, with proceeds going towards Cam's Cause.)

Cameron Baird was born in Burnie, Tasmania, on 7 June 1981. He joined the Australian Regular Army in January 2000 and served in East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan. On his second operational tour in Afghanistan in 2007, Baird was awarded the Medal of Gallantry. On his fourth tour in 2013, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Ghawchak, Uruzgan province battle.

Baird led his team in silencing several enemy positions under heavy small-arms fire. He then went to the aid of another team whose commander had been seriously wounded. With selfless disregard for his safety, Baird drew fire from an enemy machine-gun position, allowing his team to regain the initiative. He charged the enemy's position three times to draw fire away from his team, ultimately costing him his life.

Cameron Baird was an exceptionally modest man who spent significant time supporting organisations raising money for soldier welfare on home soil. In an interview, Doug Baird, Cam's father, said, "It's easy for a parent to say my son, my daughter, was the greatest on earth, but Cameron was as close to perfect as you could get".

After he died in 2013, his friends and family pledged to endure his legacy and emulate his passion for soldier welfare as their way of honouring and paying tribute to an Australian hero. With this passion, Cam's Cause charity started in 2014.

    7 June 1981 – 22 June 2013, Cameron Baird is Australia's 100th recipient of the Victoria Cross

Cam's Cause aims to help soldiers struggling with the effects of serving in the elite 2nd Commando Regiment, a division of Australia's Special Forces Task Group. The team aims to raise much-needed funds to help build specially designed camps that provide a unique environment incorporating general outdoor activities and specialist help created by the 2nd Commando Regiment's Human Performance Wing. These camps have been created for Commandos by Commandos. They are proven to make a difference in assisting recovery from physical and mental injuries. Networking with some of Cameron's close friends within the 2nd Commando Regiment offers a fantastic opportunity to make a difference.

Since its inception, Cam's Cause has achieved more than its initial expectations. Some of the charity's achievements include:

    • A life-size bronze statue dedicated to Baird by the Governor-General,
    • The CPL Cameron Baird VC MG Award for Courage and Leadership for the Redland Sharks Junior Team,
    • An annual Remembrance Ceremony at the Melbourne Shire of Remembrance,
    • Cam's Cause Charity nights at various locations across Australia and visits to Victorian and Queensland Primary Schools to talk about CPL Cameron Baird VC MG's "Aspire to Inspire" program, aimed at steering young people down the right path.

To continue supporting soldier welfare, Military Shop, in partnership with Cam's Cause, offers the Cameron Baird VC MG Medallion Set, an exquisite tribute to Baird that features a commemorative proof quality medallion and replica Victoria Cross and Medal for Gallantry. Military Shop will donate up to 20% of the proceeds to Cam's Cause.
