Today, the Prime Minister and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs launched a commemorative medallion to honour those who served in the Vietnam War. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, "This year, as we mark 50 years since the role of Australian troops in the hostilities in Vietnam came to a close, let us acknowledge your service and sacrifice."
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. As a nation, we honour the Vietnam veterans by creating a Commemorative Medallion and Certificate of Commemoration produced by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). These will be available to all living veterans, widows of veterans, and other family members of veterans of the Vietnam War, with one medallion available per veteran.
DVA commissioned the Military Shop to design and manufacture the Commemorative Medallion in October 2022. The medallion's obverse design features the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, with 'Vietnam War' and 'Australia Remembers' inscribed at the top and bottom. The reverse design features a stunning Vietnam motif with “1962-73 on the top rim and “Thank You For Your Service” on the bottom rim. The stunning motif features a UH-1 Iroquois "Huey" Helicopter, a depiction of HMAS Sydney (III) "Vung Tau Ferry", and an Australian soldier holding an SLR.

The certificate's design includes the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, 'Australia Remembers' wording, and the signatures of the Governor-General and the Prime Minister. The certificate will be contained within its folder, which allows for independent display, framing and mounting. The medallion will be presented in a display case. It will include a card explaining the design and a brief expression of thanks.
"To each and every one of our Vietnam veterans: We honour you. We thank you," said Minister for Veterans' Affairs Matt Keogh. DVA: Vietnam War Commemorative Medallion and Certificate
The Vietnam war saw over 60,000 Australian troops sent to Vietnam, resulting in over 500 Australian deaths and more than 2,500 injuries. Despite being one of the more minor contributors to the war, Australian troops played an important role in slowing the spread of communism in the region and supporting South Vietnamese troops.
