Q. How much knowledge did the Allies have of Gallipoli before the landings?
A. Contrary to accepted myth, Allied knowledge of terrain and forces on the Gallipoli Peninsula was quite good. A detailed intelligence summary, prepared by the then British Military Attaché in Turkey in 1913, was readily available, along with reasonably accurate (although large scale) maps. Detailed reconnaissance was carried out from the sea prior to the landings and several aerial reconnaissance flights were also carried out.
