    Q.   What happened to the dead?
    A.   Where possible the bodies of the dead who fell on the battlefield were recovered for burial in one of a number of cemeteries established at Gallipoli. Sadly, the bodies of a large number of Anzacs who died in battle, especially during the August offensives, could not be recovered until 1919, by which time the bodies had been reduced to often scattered bones. Men who died on transports or hospital ships were buried at sea, while men who died in hospital on Lemnos and Malta, in Egypt and in Britain were interred in cemeteries at those places.
